Nonnerl narrates the tale, seamlessly blending her fame as a musical genius, the jealousy that creeps in as she recognizes her brother’s talent, and her desire to be remembered in a world that will not celebrate her accomplishments. The Kingdom of Back tells the story of the siblings, emphasizing the fantastical world that the two created to amuse and entertain themselves and offer a bit of escapism from the challenges of the real world. ![]() Few think of his sister, Maria Anna “Nonnerl” Mozart, a talented musician and composer in her own right. Mozart is a household name, but really it is only Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart who is associated with the name. ![]()

Fun enough, although I always thought that Kirby’s collages looked to be too much work for stuff he could more effectively do with a pencil, and were never done enough justice by the mediocre printing of the era. ![]() This issue also includes a two page article by Kirby on the topic of UFOs, “They’re Still Up There”, illustrated with four Kirby collages. A little bit of a strange story, but lots of fun to read.Ī JACK KIRBY COLLECTOR article on SPIRIT WORLD, including a penciled page from this story and comments by Mark Evanier is available here. ![]() Lot’s of amazing action in here, with the story of Toxl, the leader of a primitive tribe leading a rebellion against a group of technologically advanced conquerors. “Toxl” is visually the best of those, with some great images, including one of the best two-page spreads I think Kirby ever did. This story is inked by Mike Royer, and, though he’s uncredited, written with Mark Evanier (see the article linked to below for details). ![]() This 12 page story is one of four that were intended for SPIRIT WORLD #2 and then published in various DC horror anthology books. ![]() ![]() He suggests that meditation might help us achieve the state of supreme serenity and insight known as enlightenment. ![]() As Wright says in a Wall Street Journal essay, “ The Meditation Cure,” meditation “turns out to be one of the best ways to deal with the anxieties and appetites bequeathed to us by our evolutionary history.” But we can overcome these harmful tendencies through meditation, which helps us gain insight into and control over ourselves. We are prone to excessive emotions, like desire, fear and anger, and to self-deception, which were instilled in us by natural selection. ![]() Guided by evolutionary psychology (his intellectual lodestar) and Buddhism, he diagnoses humanity’s ills and prescribes a treatment: Why Buddhism Is True: The Science and Philosophy of Meditation and Enlightenment, which just hit the bestseller lists, is Wright’s most ambitious book. We’re obsessed with the same ridiculously big questions: What is the meaning of life? Does God exist? What is human nature? How constrained are we by our biology? What hope is there for us? In The Moral Animal, Nonzero and The Evolution of God, Wright explores these riddles with such crisp, assured intelligence that it’s hard figuring out where he goes wrong. I’m a friend and fan of mega-pundit Robert Wright. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() How would you feel if you were stood up? Embarrassed? Upset? Pissed off? I love diverse books (that much is blazingly obvious), and I adore diverse genre fiction so the fact that Renegades was diverse was a huge plus for me. In case you’re wondering what I liked about it I’ve prepared a handy list for you: It wasn’t quite what I was expecting, but once I got used to that I was okay with it. But Nova’s allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice – and in Nova. Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. ![]() As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone…except the villains they once overthrew. The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies – humans with extraordinary abilities – who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. Some Americans realized the irony of enslaved Black people fighting under the banner of the Declaration of Independence. Unlike their white counterparts, these Black Soldiers did not receive any compensation for their service after the war. 14, 1781, they took part in the assault and capture of Redoubt 10. As Old as Time is the third book in the hit YA line that reimagines classic Disney stories in surprising new ways. Happily, it stays true to a beloved relic from my childhood while taking on new, more mature (still teen-friendly) themes. I collect novelizations of the classic fairy tale, though, so this addition could not be overlooked. ![]() I grew up with Disney’s animated classics, and Beauty and the Beast was one I, a bookish brunette in a small town, particularly identified with, so I was intrigued, but not quite certain how I would respond to this book. However, after the first section (about the point where Belle sneaks into the forbidden west wing), the narrative spins off in a new direction entirely. The beginning plodded, as I itched to follow the story of young Maurice and Rosalind, but every other chapter interrupted the flow with Belle’s familiar story-basically straight out of the movie. In this story, Belle’s absent mother was a powerful sorceress named Rosalind-the sorceress, in fact, who cast the spell cursing a spoiled young prince to life as a Beast unless he could learn to love. Disney’s classic Beauty and the Beast takes a dark, yet intriguing, turn in this twisted tale. ![]() ![]() ![]() This book was released on with total page 115 pages.
